Tom James to join Exeter Chiefs

Wednesday, February 13th, 2013

Tom James, the former Wales international winger has announced that he will make the switch to the Aviva Premiership Rugby Football Union club the Exeter Chiefs after seven glorious years with the Cardiff Blues. James arrived in the rugby scene in Wales back in 2007, having left behind an extremely promising career in athletics to become a professional rugby player, making his debut with The Blues in a match against Edinburgh Rugby at Murrayfield, scoring on his debut as well.

He was rewarded with an international call up that same season when he toured Australia with the Wales Rugby Team, although he wasn’t given his debut before the August of that year when he was given his first run out in Welsh colors against England at Twickenham.

And speaking of his decision to end his seven year association with the Cardiff Blues to make the switch to the Exeter Chiefs in the Aviva Premiership, he has had a fantastic seven year stint with the club and he is extremely grateful to the club for having the confidence in him to let him play seven years with them and thanked them for the support they have given him.

He went on to add that he has had a lot of standout moments with the club but winning the Amlin Challenge Cups and the EDF stand out as the most beautiful moments of his long career with The Blues. He did say that it wasn’t an easy decision for him to leave the club after seven years at the club, especially after the club made a very good offer but he felt he needed a change of scenery and a new challenge and that is why he chose to move north of the border and hopes to give the same level of success to The Chiefs.

Baxter Relieved with Exeter Chiefs

Wednesday, October 10th, 2012

Aviva Premiership Rugby Union side the Exeter Chiefs ran out as convincing winners on the first day of the new season of the Premiership last Saturday with a convincing 43-6 win over the Sale Sharks, which was third consecutive season with an opening day victory. Rob Baxter saw his men run six tries past a hapless Sharks defense at Sandy Park, with The Sharks replying with just two penalties. And for Rob Baxter, the Director of Rugby for The Chiefs, both the performance as well as the result was a relief.

Baxter knows that his team is in for a tough season in their third season of the top flight of English professional rugby, in which they will also play in Heineken Cup. And according to Baxter, it is the first win on the board for the season and when one looks at it from the perspective of a coach, one feels a lot relieved with all the teams starting on same points. But the Exeter Chiefs gave The Sharks their due as well, stating that although the score line did not reflect it, the game was extremely competitive for a very long period of time.

He added that almost all the areas of the game were competitive and just because they managed to shade enough of them; they had the momentum and scored the tries. Baxter pointed out that when a team is down and has to come back, they start losing the shape and this is what happened for the Sale Sharks.

Baxter also gave the players of Exeter Chiefs their due credit, admitting that he was pleased that they worked long and hard to find the cracks in The Sharks defense and exploited them, which translated into the massive score line at the end of the match.
